What a good shingle roof needs
- A sealed deck. A peel-and-stick layer under the shingles helps keep water out if a shingle blows off in a storm. It can also earn a wind mitigation discount.
- Proper nailing. Shingles need to be nailed in the right spot, with the right number of nails for a high-wind area.
- Metal flashing. Walls, chimneys and other openings get metal flashing, fitted on site.
- Good ventilation. Ridge and soffit vents keep the attic from overheating, which helps the shingles last longer.
Shingle brands we install
We install shingles from GAF, Owens Corning, CertainTeed and Tamko. We'll help you choose the product and color that fit your home and budget.
When shingles make sense
Shingles cost less than tile or metal and go on faster, which makes them a good fit for many homes and budgets. In coastal sun, expect them to last fewer years than tile or metal.
Shingle repairs
Lifted or missing shingles, cracked pipe boots and damaged flashing can usually be repaired if they're caught early. If your roof was built under the 2007 code or later, a large repair only requires the repaired area to meet current code. Learn more in our 25% rule guide.
